How it started...

Our name might suggest otherwise but WestCord Hotels is a purely Dutch owned and operated family business, with its origins on the Island of Vlieland. In the 1960s tourism started growing on the Wadden Islands so in 1968 baker Emo Westers bought his 18-year-old son Harry a hotel, “De Wadden”. The very first WestCord Hotel.

Today, there are 16 WestCord Hotels throughout the Netherlands. A number of hotels operate under their own name and are soft-branded ‘by WestCord’, each with a unique story and link to Dutch history. Like Hotel New York in Rotterdam, located in the former headquarters of the famous ‘Holland-America Line’.

50th anniversary

We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2018 by opening Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam, an energy neutral, oriental inspired hotel with subtropical courtyard. And in 2021 The Market Hotel Groningen was added to our hotel group.
We have opened a ‘Bakkerij Westers’ (Westers Bakery) in both new hotels, a nod to the Westers family history, who have been bakers for generations.

Usually we can be found in our hotels where we are constantly working on improvement and renewal. In our vision, a hotel should be full service, distinctive and match its environment. Apart from hotel guests, local residents and businesses can also use all hotel facilities. Our door is wide open to everyone.

Passion and perseverance have enabled us to expand, and true gems were added over the years. We are fortunate to have a professional management team and dedicated employees who go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

1968

Father Emo Westers bought Hotel de Wadden on Vlieland for his 18 year old son Harry

1987

Altea Hotel Seeduyn on Vlieland was built and opened. A franchise was agreed with Pullman Hotels.

1992

The adjacent Strandhotel is purchased, demolished and completely rebuilt, opening in 1992. A new franchise partner was found and Golden Tulip Resort Strandhotel Seeduyn was realised.

1994

The move to the neighboring island was made with the construction and opening of Golden Tulip Resort Schylge on Terschelling.

1995

Construction and opening of beach pavilion ’t Badhuys on Vlieland.

2001

Two brand new hotels; in February Golden Tulip Resort Boschrijck on Terschelling and in April Tulip Inn Art in Amsterdam.

2002

After sitting empty and unfinished, Residentie Noordsee Ameland was acquired. It was completed and in April Golden Tulip Resort Noordsee was opened.
In July of this year a new lunchroom and bar next to Hotel De Wadden was opened: ‘t Praethuys.

2004

In January, Ramada Amsterdam City Centre on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal became part of the group.

In February, in addition to the existing 3-star Tulip Inn Amsterdam Art, the 4-star Golden Tulip Amsterdam Art was opened. The concept was dubbed ‘seven stars under one roof’!

2006

In January WestCord Hotels becomes the proud owner of Hotel New York Rotterdam. It is located in the former headquarters of the Holland-America Line (HAL), the steamship company that introduced immigrants throughout Europe to a whole new future.

2009

In July Fashion Hotel Amsterdam opposite the World Fashion center opened.

Opening of WTC Hotel Leeuwarden, next to WTC Expo.

WestCord Hotels acquires Tulip Inn Delft, a collaboration with the IKEA Concept Centre.

November 1st: WestCord Hotels leaves Golden Tulip. The 7 Golden Tulip franchise hotels now operate under the brand name WestCord Hotels.

2011

In November the brand new beachfront wellness center “WellCome” in Strandhotel Seeduyn opens.

2012

In September WestCord Hotels contracted a franchise agreement with the former Golden Tulip Garderen and Tulip Inn Raalte. The hotels continue as “WestCord Hotel De Veluwe” and “WestCord Hotel Salland”.

2013

WestCord Hotels acquires the ss Rotterdam, the former cruise ship with permanent moorings in Rotterdam. It is a unique event venue, hotel, attraction and has several restaurants and bars.

2014

WestCord Hotels wins the tender for a new hotel on Java Eiland (Java Island) in Amsterdam. Hotel Jakarta would eventually open in 2018.

2017

In April the renewed beach pavilion Badhuys on Vlieland reopens. It had to move by order of the government, a good reason to build a completely new, sustainable and larger beach pavilion. This did not go unnoticed. In July, Badhuys was voted “Best Beach Pavilion in the Netherlands”.

2018

WestCord Hotels celebrates its 50th anniversary on May 1st!
And on May 5th, Hotel New York celebrates 25 years.

In June, Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam ‘by WestCord’ opened its doors! After two years of construction, the hotel is ready to be discovered. The hotel has a modern look with Indonesian influences.

2020

WestCord Hotel Salland is sold and no longer part of the WestCord portfolio.

2021

In May the doors of The Market Hotel ‘by WestCord’ opened. This hotel is located right on the Grote Markt square of Groningen.

2022

April: another hotel ‘by WestCord’: Hotel Arsenaal in Delft. This 63 boutique style room hotel is located in an old warehouse dating all the way back to 1601.
