Rotterdam Make it Happen!
Welcome to Rotterdam Rotterdam is a young, dynamic metropolis that continues to renew itself at a rapid pace. Sparkling skyscrapers, an impressive harbour, trendy restaurants and food markets, renowned museums and great festivals are the direct result of the can-do mentality of the Rotterdammers. Add to that the many special attractions and city tours – by bike, bus, boat or on foot.
Full of energy and the urge to innovate, Rotterdam has reinvented itself after the bombing in the Second World War. People broke with the past and preferred modern architecture. Light, air and space, that was the motto and groundbreaking for the time. Rotterdam still embraces the experiment: almost anything is possible. You will be constantly surprised by yet another new initiative: from a city farm on the roof to a music festival in the harbour, from an exclusive rooftop bar to a beer brewery in an old warehouse.
If you like architecture, then a visit to Rotterdam – with its patchwork of architectural styles – is a must. Icons of Nieuwe Bouwen stand next to the typical reconstruction architecture from the sixties, seventies and eighties. They happily clash with the hypermodern landmarks that have been added in recent decades: the Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam Central Station, De Rotterdam, the Timmerhuis and of course the Markthal. In the first covered market hall in the Netherlands you will find about 100 fresh food units, almost 15 food shops and various restaurants including Jamie’s Italian (by Jamie Oliver). If you look up, you will see the largest work of art in the Netherlands, the Horn of Plenty mural.
As a port city, Rotterdam is inextricably linked to the water. From the Maas that flows right through the city to the many (historic) inland ports such as Delfshaven. Thanks to the Maas, the city flows seamlessly into its industrial port, which extends some 40 kilometers to Maasvlakte 2 and Hoek van Holland.
So there is an incredible amount of fun to do in Rotterdam, for young and old. Sailing through the harbour, visiting attractions, admiring architecture, looking at art, shopping, going out… On this website you will find all kinds of tips to make your stay in Rotterdam as pleasant as possible.
